Please join us in extending our best wishes to Craig D. Bachman and William P. “Bill” Hutchison, who recently retired from Lane Powell. The two have been integral to Lane Powell’s success for many years, and their hard work and dedication to the firm will be greatly missed.
Craig Bachman began his legal career in 1978, representing clients in all phases of business and commercial litigation with emphasis in intellectual property, antitrust, trade regulation, insurance practices and professional malpractice. He worked primarily as a trial lawyer, taking many major antitrust and intellectual property cases to trial, judgment and appeal, including patent appeals in the Federal Circuit. Bachman successfully represented major manufacturers in connection with several U.S. Department of Justice international price-fixing investigations including proceedings in Europe, Canada, Japan, England, Brazil, Australia and Korea. He also led teams in antitrust class actions and opt-out litigation following government investigations in graphite electrodes, fine carbon, wire harness, industrial and automotive bearings, and other products. Outside of the courtroom, Bachman counseled clients on marketing, business and brand development, and technology development. He also served as a mediator in both litigated and non-litigated matters.
Bachman is Past President of the Oregon State Bar Antitrust Section, Past Chairman of the Japan America Society of Oregon and Former Director of the Bicycle Transportation Alliance. He was a frequent author and speaker throughout his career. Bachman’s practice has been honored by numerous organizations, including Martindale-Hubbell®, The Best Lawyers in America©, Super Lawyers®, Benchmark Litigation and the Multnomah Bar Association. He received his J.D. from Lewis & Clark Law School and his B.S. from Portland State University.
Bill Hutchison launched his practice in 1969, joining McCulloch Dezendorf Spears & Lubersky (which later merged with Lane Powell). While he ventured to other firms during his career, we were lucky to have him rejoin is in 2011. Hutchison’s initial practice focused on business and personal injury litigation, later turning to agricultural cooperatives, corporate governance, real property and environmental regulatory matters. He served as lead counsel for Linnton Plywood Association in the Portland Harbor Superfund Site Litigation, which resulted in extricating the cooperative’s working members from the litigation and allowing the sale of their mill-site property. Hutchison also served as counsel to the Diack Family in the Sandy River Scenic Waterway Litigation, which resulted in the requirement of “scenic waterway flows” being established before upstream diversions could be permitted. Beginning in 1996, Hutchison acted as corporate secretary and counsel to NORPAC Foods, a large fruit and vegetable cooperative in the Willamette Valley.
Hutchison has been a longtime steward of Oregon’s farm and forestland and an active member of the Portland community, including positions as Chair of Oregon’s Environmental Quality Commission and an eight-year term on the state Board of Forestry. For many years, he served on the LTA Committee of the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives and one year as its Chair. Hutchison was a Founding Director of the Lower Columbia Estuary Partnership and of The High Desert Museum. He received the Agricultural Cooperative Council of Oregon’s Hall of Fame Award in 2015 and the Regional Northwest Agricultural Cooperatives Recognition Award in 2008, along with honors from Super Lawyers® and Martindale-Hubbell®. Hutchison received his J.D. from Willamette University and his B.S. in Economics from the University of Oregon.
