Walter McMonies was quoted in a January 24 Portland Tribune article titled “Fixing Bricks: How to Seismically Retrofit Unreinforced Masonry.” McMonies discusses the unique construction and financial challenges involved in doing seismic upgrades to unreinforced masonry buildings (URMs) from his perspective as an owner of Trinity Place Apartments — one of 1,8884 URMs in Portland.
Walter McMonies, attorney at Lane Powell, owns multiple URMs and is a volunteer on the URM policy committee that is developing the draft. McMonies is wrapping up the years-long process of retrofitting the Trinity Place Apartments, built in 1910 and located at 117 N.W. Trinity Pl. near Providence Park.
“It’s a classic unfunded mandate,” McMonies said. “The City is saying, and I agree, these should be retrofitted and saved — I love old buildings for one thing — but there isn’t the money there to do it.”
McMonies said in general, people updating URM building will spend 40 percent of the renovation budget on seismic retrofitting.
