Lane Powell President Lewis Horowitz and the managing partners of five other Seattle-area firms were interviewed by DeNovo, a publication of the Washington State Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division, about what makes good letter writing.  Horowitz suggests being formal, being careful about what you write even in internal e-mails and keeping it short.

“I have always had an irreverent streak that manifests a lack of formality,” says Lewis Horowitz, president of Lane Powell.  “However, as president of the firm there are fewer people willing to criticize my informality and more people who tolerate my attempts at humor.  I encourage younger lawyers to draft more formally, since some recipients will interpret informality as a sign of reduced respect for the recipient or the importance of the communication.”
