Butler Advises Businesses How to Protect Permanent Resident Status of Employees

Foreign nationals in the United States with permanent resident status may lose that status if their employer sends them on long-term assignments abroad, Diane Butler warns in a recent article in Workforce Management. To ensure that permanent resident status is not lost, Diane suggests foreign workers deployed abroad by U.S. companies should demonstrate their ties to the U.S. by making regular trips back, staying a couple of weeks, and clearly demonstrating an effort to keep their affairs in order back in America. These ties are best demonstrated to immigration officials, Diane suggests, by leaving family and children back home in the U.S. during stints out of the U.S.; however, she acknowledges that it is often impossible.
