Butler Advises International Companies to Be Mindful of Human Rights Oversight
A recent article by Paul Chavez for the Associated Press features commentary from Diane Butler. Chavez explains the agreement reached to settle human rights lawsuits brought against Unocal Corp. over a 1990s pipeline project allegedly constructed with forced labor and violence carried out by the military of Myanmar.
Human rights groups were instrumental in representing victims of the alleged abuse and putting great pressure upon Unocal. Butler warns that companies should take the case as a warning: “If there’s one thing to take away here, it’s that corporations need to be mindful that they must be accountable in their overseas operations because there are human rights groups that are watching them. The world is watching essentially.”
