Succession Planning in Difficult Times

The economy is in its worst contraction since the Depression. In estate planning we have a confluence of three facts:

  • Interest rates are low.
  • The estate and gift tax is set to expire in 2010 and proposed legislation would limit the ability to utilize several of the planning opportunities that form the core of tax saving tools.
  • The contraction in the economy has resulted in the decrease in value of many of our clients’ closely held business interests.
