In December 2000, the Legal Immigration and Family Equity (“LIFE”) Act was signed into law. Among other things, it amended Section 245(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (“INK”). Section 245(i) allows an alien to adjust his or her status to that of a lawful permanent resident while in the United States, notwithstanding the fact that he or she entered without inspection, overstayed, or worked without authorization, if certain conditions are met.
