U.S. Supreme Court Resolves Arbitration Controversy: Arbitration Agreements In Employment Contracts Are Enforceable Under Federal Arbitration Act

On March 21, 2001, the U. S. Supreme Court ruled in Circuit City Stores v. Adams, that agreements to arbitrate employees’ claims against their employers are enforceable under the provisions of the Federal Arbitration Act (“FAA”). Adams, an employee of Circuit City in Santa Rosa, California, had signed an agreement to arbitrate any claims against his employer, but instead sued his employer in court for discrimination.
