Day Quoted in Puget Sound Business Journal Article Regarding Benefits for Same-Sex Couples

Lane Powell Counsel to the Firm Craig Day was quoted in a November 1 Puget Sound Business Journal article titled “Same-Sex Couples Ruling Calls for Review of Benefits.” The article was about recent changes to the benefits of same-sex couples since the Supreme Court struck down a section of the Defense of Marriage Act last summer, which gave same-sex married couples the same rights to health benefits as their straight married counterparts. The ruling means that same-sex couples will no longer have to pay taxes to enroll a spouse in company benefits, and their spouse will also have more rights in claiming retirement benefits.

“That’s because the value of benefits was added to the partner’s income and taxed,” said Craig Day, an attorney with Lane Powell who helps the firm’s business clients with employee benefits.
