Washington Gov. Gregoire Signs SHB 1329 to Help Fund School Music Programs
Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire has signed SHB 1329 creating a “Music Matters” special license plate to help fund school music programs around the state. Lane Powell Shareholder Mike Nesteroff drafted the original bill for Music Aid NW, a nonprofit started by Lane Powell’s Lawyerpalooza friend Alan White, drummer for Yes and John Lennon, and his wife Gigi. With 23 existing special license plates, the bill had to overcome a state-imposed moratorium but sailed through the legislature due in part to severe budget shortfalls putting education in general, and music programs in particular, on the chopping block. Music Aid NW is in the process of raising $35,000 to defray the state’s startup costs and provide 3,500 signatures from registered vehicle owners. Nesteroff also assisted Music Aid NW with developing rules for its license plate design contest, which will accept design submissions through May 15.
