Bachman Discusses Greenwashing in Portland Business Journal Article
Lane Powell Shareholder Craig Bachman was quoted in a Portland Business Journal article about the business dangers of “greenwashing,” the practice of co-opting the trappings of the green movement without the business practices to back it up. The article, “Victims of ‘Greenwashing’ to Aim at Perpetrators,” was published on Friday, January 18.
Bachman said greenwashing is a truth-in-advertising issue and can be a litigation risk. However, he noted that in unsubstantiated claims of environmental goodness, the difficulty is in proving significant financial harm. “Where are the big damages — and therefore the injunctive relief?” he said, adding that terms to describe “green” products are still vague and undefined, and therefore difficult to prove.
