Thomas Sondag and Stephanie Hendricks co-authored an August 24, 2007, Portland Business Journalcolumn titled “Noncompliance with new ID theft law could cost businesses.” Sondag and Hendricks urged companies to safely maintain their consumer data; otherwise, they might suffer costly consequences under the Oregon Consumer Theft Protection Act, a new law effective January 1, 2008, that requires businesses to develop and implement programs to protect consumer information, to provide notice when a security breach occurs, and to abide by the state’s authority to investigate and punish violations of the law.
